What makes pigs being a good show pig?

Hello and welcome back to my blog. ( The Daily Oink )

My name is Nevaeh Wormington.

I am going to be talking about how pig are good show pigs and why?

A good show pig is normally healthy, well- structured, and has good volume in muscle.

“Choosing the right pig for showing involves a combination of knowing your show’s requirements, understanding your own goals, and evaluating the pig’s physical traits and overall health” https://www.trojanlivestock.com/how-to-choose-the-best-show-pig-traits-tips-selection-guide/

Know Your Show’s Requirements and Your Goals

Have your starting and ending goals. Needing to know your minimum and maximum weight for your fair. Your goal (learning, winning, or showcasing a specific trait) will influence your choice and subsequent management.

Work with a Reputable Hog Breeder

Visit local farmers that sell pigs or talk to your Advisor about finding a pig breeder for your 4-H or FFA project.

Evaluate Physical Traits

Looking at pigs that move fluidly, looking at the main body of the pig to see if they have good strength.

Consider Age, Breed, and Sex

You are going to need a barrow or gilt, different breeds have different temperatures and grow rates, you should have your pig for about six months and you should get your pig from about three months old.

Plan for Nutrition and Management

You are going to need to plan for over all feeding, watering, and natural care of the pig. Making sure you are prepared for any notational issues that may come your way.

Pigs are shown to compete in contests based on their quality, and exhibitors skill on how many years they have experienced with showing animals.

“There are no secrets to success, it is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure.”- Colin Powell

Work ethic is the most value trait to have in todays’ society and showing pigs helps to develop a great work ethic. When showing competitively it takes time to work with pigs. There’s countless hours spent working with pigs from washing and getting them out and walking them around to get them use to being lead around with a show stick. You won’t always get to go out and do stuff with your friends because your busy taking care of your pigs getting them ready for shows. This helps prepare young adults for what the real world is like.” https://wiuag.wordpress.com/2017/11/02/the-benefits-of-showing-pigs-2/
