My favorite pig 🐷

Image
Hello, my name is Nevaeh! welcome to my blog, The Daily Oink.  I’m gonna be talking about my favorite pig and why.  This pig was my favorite pig. His name was BB short for bucking bronco.  This pig had good muscle quality, perfect amount of protein, nice walking ability, and most of all listened amazingly.  This type of breed is a Berkshire. Most Berkshires are black pigs sometimes they will have a white feet or a belt..  This pig was my best friend for 5 months until he had a hernia and he had to go be put down. It was very sad and heartbreaking. I was devastated to see BB go through this. He was an incredible pig, he was full of energy and he was so happy to be around. Tacking care of him was not a chore. It was something I looked forward to every morning and night going to the barn and seeing him. BB was my favorite pig of all time.   https://www.ottenwaltershowpigs.com/april-30-2022/ Berkshires are popular show pigs  known for their distinct...

Smart pigs

Hello and welcome back to my blog. My name is Nevaeh Wormington.  I’m going to be talking about how smart pigs are.  When it comes to discussing animal intelligence, pigs often tend to be overlooked in favour of more commonly recognized intelligent species like dolphins, dogs, and primates. However, it may surprise you to learn that pigs are highly intelligent creatures.   Pigs are smart in many ways. Pigs are one of the most intelligent animals.  Pigs have advanced skills, including excellent long term memory, complex social intelligence, and even the capacity for empathy, allowing them to learn new tasks.  This also helps with FFA and 4-H show pig to learn how to train and work with the animals.  “Pigs are extraordinary animals with remarkable cognitive abilities. Recognizing and spreading awareness of their intelligence can lead to more compassionate and respectful treatment of these amazing animals.” Said  https://www.worldanimalprotection.ca/blog...

The Daily Oink!

Hello, and welcome back to my blog. ( The Daily Oink! ) My name is Nevaeh, and I am going to be talking about pig ear notching. Pig notching is used for identification on pigs. Methods to distinguish individual pigs by marking their ears with a series of nicks and holes. How pig notching works is that the right ear is connected with the litter number. The left ear is connected by the individual pig number. A common system that uses a grid with values like 1, 3, 9, and 81. It’s best to perform notching when the pigs are very young, ideally with the first week of life, to ensure it’s done efficiently. https://extensionpubs.unl.edu/publication/g1880/na/html/view https://mercyforanimals.org/blog/meat-industry-mutilates-piglets/ Why they use this is because unlike ear tags, notches are permanent marks that cannot be lost or damaged in the long term. It allows farmers to fallow an individual pigs life, including health and performance issues. Notching is a requirement for identification in t...

Hello and welcome back to my blog! My name is Nevaeh Wormington. 10/21/25  The Daily oink I am going to be talking about show pig breeds on where they came from.  There are various breeds in the pig industry for show, pets and many others, but I’m going to be talking about market (show pigs) including Duroc, Hampshire, Yorkshire, and Berkshire.  Duroc   Originating in the eastern United States and the Corn Belt, the Duroc breed of hogs, initially known as Duroc-Jersey, lacks a definitively traceable foundation due to the blending of various red hog strains. These strains include hogs from the Guinea coast of Africa, brought by early slave trading vessels, and others from Spain and Portugal, with importations by figures like Columbus, DeSoto, Henry Clay, and Daniel Webster. The breed was further shaped by two distinct strains: the Jersey Red of New Jersey, known for their large size and ruggedness, and the Duroc of New York, with the amalgamation of these strains larg...

The Daily Oink!

Hello, welcome back to my blog! My name is Nevaeh!  I am going to be talking about pigs day to day life as a show pig!  From my time raising show pigs, I learned that starting the day bright and early was key. My pigs would be up and moving first thing, getting outside to stretch their legs and run around before breakfast, which was always served by 10 AM. After that, I'd head off to my own activities, returning in the evening for a walk around, either in the barn or outside, pig whip in hand. A couple of laps in our concrete front yard added a bit more exercise and training. Once that was done, my pig would get some free time in the field while I prepped the food. Every morning and night, my pig ate 2 quarts of beet pulp and 2 quarts of Show-Rite pig feed. Sometimes, I'd mix in half a quart of oats, and for really good behavior, a little treat like a marshmallow or a peach ring. This was our weekday routine. Weekends were more intense because I had more time. After the mornin...
