I am going to be talking about show pig breeds on where they came from.

There are various breeds in the pig industry for show, pets and many others, but I’m going to be talking about market (show pigs) including Duroc, Hampshire, Yorkshire, and Berkshire.

Duroc

Originating in the eastern United States and the Corn Belt, the Duroc breed of hogs, initially known as Duroc-Jersey, lacks a definitively traceable foundation due to the blending of various red hog strains. These strains include hogs from the Guinea coast of Africa, brought by early slave trading vessels, and others from Spain and Portugal, with importations by figures like Columbus, DeSoto, Henry Clay, and Daniel Webster. The breed was further shaped by two distinct strains: the Jersey Red of New Jersey, known for their large size and ruggedness, and the Duroc of New York, with the amalgamation of these strains largely occurring in the Midwestern states. Durocs exhibit considerable color variation, ranging from light golden to dark mahogany, and are characterized by a medium face length, a slight dish, and drooping ears.

Hampshire

Hampshire hogs, originating from the "Old English Breed" in Scotland and England, were imported to America between 1825 and 1835, becoming popular in Kentucky where they were known as "Thin Rinds" for their hardiness and carcass qualities. To maintain breed purity, the American Thin Rind Association was formed in 1893, later evolving into the Hampshire Swine Registry in 1939. Hampshires gained popularity in the Corn Belt between 1910 and 1920, prized for their leanness, muscle quality, and carcass traits, with females recognized as excellent mothers, leading to their reputation as "The Mark of a Meat Hog"

Yorkshire

The Yorkshire pig originated in 18th-century Yorkshire, England, and was further developed in the United States. These pigs are known for their large size, excellent meat production, adaptability, and high productivity. They have erect ears, a slightly dished face, and a strong, lean build, with females weighing 500-700 pounds and males 600-800 pounds

Berkshire

The Berkshire pig is an ideal breed for first-time owners due to its great personality, friendly disposition, manageable size, and tasty meat. It is one of the oldest breeds, with possible origins dating back to the 17th century or, more reliably, to 1790 in Berkshire, England, and has been popular across various regions.
